Courses at a glance
LISC students make rapid progress during our English language and academic programmes. Our centre specialises in offering both overseas and domestic students intensive English courses, preparation in academic subjects for Key Stage 1 - 3, GCSE, A Level and IB exams, or simply in improving their performance at school. In close association with Sutherland Education, LISC integrates educational support with pastoral care, creating the exceptional opportunity of benefiting from English at All Times (EAT)©.
We provide our students with an assessment of their educational needs and discuss their aspirations, skills and potential. It is our primary aim to meet our students' expectations and to keep them motivated.

LISC courses are designed to assist our students to reach their required level of English. They can therefore look forward to their studies within the UK education system and to integrating more readily into their respective schools. Some students come to us simply to improve their English, even if they are not entering a school. The courses accommodate both younger learners and teenagers.
Beginner / Elementary
The beginner course is for students with very little or no English. The course is topic based and includes numerous reading, writing, speaking and listening tasks, which engage students through a variety of media including craft activities, interactive tasks, independent tasks and role play. At the end of the course students will be able to talk about topics such as:
- themselves, their families and their interests (present simple, past simple)
- health and the environment (present continuous)
- places they have visited and things they have done (past simple, past continuous)
- future holidays (going to, future)
|
Pre-Intermediate
The pre-intermediate course is for students with a basic English vocabulary and who are able to sustain a conversation involving places of interest and some general knowledge. The course is topic based and gives students opportunities to acquire language through a variety of creative, independent and interactive projects. At the end of the course students will be able to discuss, with increasingly descriptive language, topics that include:
- living and studying in a foreign country (past simple, past continuous)
- the arts (present simple, passive voice)
- personal opinions (adjective + infinitive)
- history (used to + infinitive, past perfect)
- the natural world (question tags, second conditional)
|
Intermediate / IELTS
The intermediate course is for students who have covered most of the basic grammar and can hold a conversation using some descriptive language, but who may not yet be familiar with the dynamics of a natural conversation. Students complete foundational preparatory work for the IELTS. At the end of the course students will be able to consolidate what they have learnt so far and use it with some fluency to discuss topics such as:
- the qualities and features of good relationships (question forms in main tenses and with modals)
- world news and celebrity gossip (present perfect and irregular verbs)
- rules and regulations (modals, don't have to/ have to)
- differing tastes in fashion (conditionals) past regrets (if only, past perfect)
|
Upper Intermediate / IELTS
The upper intermediate course is for students who have reached a higher level of fluency and are ready to explore native-speaker nuances in the English language. Topics covered address authentic situations in the real world and give students an opportunity to focus on the functional and social language they will need to cope with those situations. At the end of the course students will be ready to embark on studies that will prepare them for the IELTS exam. They will acquire a selection of language skills including the ability to:
- predict the outcome of a practical joke
- discuss crime and punishment
- guess meaning from the context
- identify homophones
- agree, disagree and interrupt using polite forms
|
Advanced / IELTS
The advanced course aims to develop learners' language and skills in preparation for the academic module of the IELTS exam. The course is designed to build students' confidence and proficiency through skills development and exam practice. Topics covered include familiar areas that learners experience on a day-to-day basis, such as the environment, communications and trade, as well as more abstract issues - sentiments, religion and philosophy. The language focus is relevant to the IELTS exam and emphasis is placed on exam-writing strategies. Students will learn to:
- understand more idioms
- use phrasal verbs
- interpret non-verbal communication
- practise language in context
